Are you in Balance? If not read this!

Let me start this blog with a little story. Once a long, long time ago, I joined a second-time Mom’s group when my second son was born. Unfortunately, I only keep in touch with two of these women now, but they have become two of my best friends and are still on my speed dial for all friendship emergencies, big or small. The other became my baby weight-loss accountability partner, weekly running partner and as we both grew our businesses, my business brainstorming partner. This is my good friend Dr. Sara Gottfried.

I remember Sara telling me years ago about this book that was in her head and in her heart – the one she was inspired to write to help women everywhere break free of the health care models and guidelines holding them back from feeling truly good, and often treating them as if they were imagining things instead.

Now this book is a reality and because I have such an in with the woman herself I get to tell you about it on release day!.  I admit, I’m a tad biased because I was an early reader, proofing this book from draft one on, but I KNOW it’s great and readable and informative. I KNOW you will learn things you didn’t know about how your body works and how to make it work better. (Men: this book is written for women, but to be honest, there’s a lot of great advice for you too – you just might feel a bit more embarrassed reading it in public. . . )

I know there is a lot of marketing hype out there. And I know there are a lot of marketing partnerships, people promoting products and people they don’t truly know or believe it. I’m always a little skeptical about what I read. I wouldn’t do that to you – even for a friend. I have read this book and it’s got a lot of great information about how our bodies really work, why hormones do what they do in our body, and innovative ways to make changes if yours are doing too much or too little and are slightly out of whack.

You don’t have to just believe biased me though – check out the full story below. Once you read it through, click here to grab a copy of her new book, The Hormone Cure (Simon & Schuster, 2013).

Ok now here’s the official promo text but I had to share the real scoop first:

I want to tell you a story about Julie.

Julie was a 49-year-old lawyer who woke up one morning, and realized something had changed. Similar to many of us, she noticed that she just wasn’t the same woman she used to be.

When she was younger, she used to train for 10K runs and go to African dance classes. Now, she felt tired and depleted, and unable to keep up with her standards.

When she was younger, she was happy and rarely stressed. Now, she almost always felt irritable—and she didn’t like the kind of person she was becoming.

Sex drive? Julie used to delight in carnal pleasures, but now she couldn’t be bothered. She rated her drive as a one on a 10-point scale. Her husband would never say it out loud, but I imagine he would have given her the same rating.

You see, as we get older, it’s natural that things slow down. We get more easily stressed. We become irritable. We simply become different people.

That’s what they tell us. So it must be true, right?

No. Dr Sara couldn’t accept that, just because there were a few more candles on our birthday cakes, we had to resign ourselves to a life of stress, sadness, and irritability.

Julie couldn’t accept it either, so she scheduled an appointment with her male gynecologist. His advice? Eat less and exercise more—the same advice you hear everyday.

But nothing changed. She still felt empty. She still felt stressed. So she decided to ask my friend, go-to- doc, and Harvard-educated integrative physician, Dr. Sara Gottfried, the same question. “Why do I feel like I’m a different person?”

Dr. Sara thought that there was something more sinister at work—some kind of problem that wouldn’t be solved by just diet and exercise. You see, Sara had experience with this exact issue in her decades of experience as a physician. She knew that sometimes, the true answer lies deeper than just diet and exercise.

Dr. Sara had a hunch—something was out of whack with Julie’s hormones. So she measured Julie’s levels. Sure enough, Julie was suffering from high cortisol. Cortisol, if you don’t know, is the stress hormone—and Julie had it in spades.

Julie followed Sara’s advice to the letter: she adjusted her diet (no gluten or sugar for one month) and changed her exercise routine to focus on lowering her cortisol level (rather than running, which raises cortisol, she started doing pilates and barre work). Additionally, she started taking the right supplements that improve hormonal balance: fish oil, phosphatidyl serine, and rhodiola.

Have you ever heard of phosphatidyl serine? I hadn’t. Neither had Julie.

But when Sara and Julie met one month later, Julie was a completely different person. Her energy had returned. She had lost 12 pounds. Her sex-drive had returned—much to the surprise of her (very gracious) husband. He said that he had his wife back, and nicknamed Sara “Dr. Hotfried.”

The surprising thing is that most women never stop to think about their hormones. They just resign themselves to a life of stress and lowered sex-drive.

You might not have the exact same problems as Julie used to have (and Dr. Sara), but I’m willing to bet that you rarely consider if your hormones are in balance. I’ve become good friends with Sara and I’ve seen her replicate her results with dozens of clients, women and men from all age groups.
